Match Report

Sunday 15th December – Harlow u14s 26 Old Brentwoods u14s 5: League

We hosted Old Brentwoods for a league game against a side last season beat us 50-5. This game took us to the mid-point of the league season with our record standing at played 3 won 3. Games to come against Thurrock, Upper Clapton and Rochford to complete the league season.

The first half a cut and thrust game with both teams working hard to win and retain the ball. Some strong scrummaging and excellent work at the break down, especially from jackal king Ed Lea created some opportunities.

From one of the opportunities, Ed Lea turned over the Old Brentwoods ball and the power running saw Tolu Ajibabi bust towards the line and his strength backed up by his team mates driving him over the line saw Harlow score their first try of the day. Joseph Pankhurst stepped up and knocked the conversion over and into the bushes in the field next door.

This back and forwards continued as Harlow took a slim lead into half time.

Half time 7 – 0.

At half time the players talked about supporting each other and sending strong runners up the middle.

In the second half Harlow appeared to change gears, first Ben Ferrier scored after Tolu got the ball and burst through the middle of the park a try converted by Tobie Westbrook, 14-0.

It was Montelle Levy’s turn to burst up the middle with a great interchange between Danny Billington, fresh back from injury, as they cause the Old Brentwoods defence to come in. This left space out wide and quick ball put Henry Stovell into the space and over the line.

Harlow’s forth try came from a turn over near our line, it might not have been Ed, but it probably was, and Ben Ferrier arched is run outside their inside centre and through the gap. He put the pedal down and outsprinted the defence to the try line. The try was converted by Tobie Westbrook.

At this point Old Brentwoods were down to 14 men so we dropped a player and Jamie Oliver, who had played very well all game came off to even up the sides for the final few minutes.

In the final moments Old Brentwoods attacked as the Harlow discipline wandered off. They build good pressure near our line and then crossed to score an unconverted try.

Final Score 26 – 5.

In training let’s work on our handling skills and following Ed’s lead as the jackal king.

Special mentions: Tobie Wesbrook, outstanding at the back. Ed Lea, we lost count of the number of jackals he achieved. Welcome back Callum Boyce who got stuck in and Callum Hewett who seemed to be keen to make some big hits and use his pace when given the opportunity.
