Sunday 27th January –Cheshunt u13s 40 Harlow u13s 15 – Friendly

Harlow travelled to another local rival this week, Cheshunt. The weather was a little breezy, a little cold and a little damp and on their newly laid all weather pitch. Unfortunately these are a few of the things that aren’t the boy’s favourite things.

Before the game we observed a minutes silence for Amanda who coaches our under 7s her husband Tim Wood and their family Harrison, Max and Matthew whose daughter and sister Hattie Mae sadly passed away this week. Our sincere thoughts and condolences are with you at this very sad time.

Prior to the game the referee advised us of some of his interpretations of the break down he would be using today. We quickly re-coached the boys on what to do at the break down which would mean more boys would need to commit to the break down to ensure we won the ball. Nonetheless we cracked on.

We intended to start the game well this week, but after we seemed to have a tackle failure across the team on anyone big, we found ourselves two tries down.

We then started to play a bit and put pressure on the Cheshunt defence. Some good movement across our back line saw is make a few line breaks. One of these breaks put Montelle Levy in a little space where he stepped and showed some pace to score in the corner.

We now found ourselves able to apply pressure and move the ball well. This pressure was pinning Cheshunt back towards their own line. From a move wide there was a ruck which Owen Eynon picked up stepped inside and sprinted to the line for us to score our second.

With the scores level Cheshunt kicked off which was caught by Owen who accelerated into space running half the length of the pitch.

Cheshunt managed a turnover in their own half and one of their big boys ran around and the length of the pitch to score. After some good phases of play it was our lack of tackling low that had meant at half time we were down a try instead of up two.

Half time 15-10

In the second half the brief was a simple one. Apply pressure, tackle low and clean out the break down.

In periods when we applied pressure we caused the Cheshunt players to make mistakes which was encouraging. Sadly our low tackling was absent, which the boys put down to being on an all-weather pitch. Our inability to stop the big boys early cost us with the Cheshunt boys scoring 5 tries in the second half, 8 in total, without playing much rugby just running with the ball they had some success. When we tried to play rugby we looked much more capable. Montelle Levy managed a second try in the game in the second half coming from us playing wide and supporting each other in the wider channels of the pitch.

Final Score 40 -15.
