Match Report

On 16th January, Harlow and Ongar colts took on Campion in a rearranged league fixture.

Harlow and Ongar started brightly, working away in attack, producing some great opportunities to run some tries. After and early opportunity was spurned, the team used the momentum they had to break through using some effective carries from the forwards and spreading the ball wide to allow the centres to link up for the first score of the game.

If Harlow and Ongar thought they could hold onto momentum, Campion had other ideas, piling pressure on, particularly with some brutal carries down the blindside of rucks and some great play to produce a try to answer to Harlow and Ongar’s second of the half. Despite increasing pressure from Campion in the first half H&O managed to hold out and responded by converting a try of their own.

In the second half Campion put their foot down and scored a great try early on, leaving H&O to compose themselves. However the visiting side were not going to make it so easy, and finding weaknesses in H&Os they levelled the score at 19 all. Pushing on further they ran in a third consecutive try to take the lead for the first time at 19-26.

H&O had to respond and that’s what they did, with replacements making an particular effort to fix weaknesses in the defence. After a couple of key turn overs and some lovely running from the back line, the scores were levelled at 26-26 going into the last 5 minutes.
The home side made the most of a turnover in the midfield, forced by some great pressure from H&O’s defensive line, they spread the ball quickly down the left hand side to score the game’s final try to take a key win in a game that was hard fought from both sides, with the score at 33-26.
Particular credit to Campion who only had 15 players to H&Os 18 and pushed them hard throughout the entire game.
Both sets of lads and coaches had smiles on faces post match after a game that was played in great spirit!
This game takes Harlow and Ongar to 4 wins and 1 loss on the season, in what is proving to be a tightly contested league.
