Match Report

Before we start the match report its worth noting a little bit of Harlow Rugby History. First time ever that Harlow U16 girls fielded a full team and played a league match. Special thank you to Pentagon Tiles, the girls looked fantastic in their kit.

This was Harlow u16’s third league fixture and was away to Datchworth.

This was another early start for the Harlow girls, although fresh it was at least not raining.

From the first kick off this game was competitive. Datchworth came at Harlow very strong and direct. This was met with some fantastic work from the Harlow girls and the tackling was huge from everyone. Datchworth spent a good period of time camped in Harlow’s ’22. They stayed very patient and were able to draw the penalty. They took a quick tap and again went into attack mode. Harlow worked really hard at the breakdown and managed to counter ruck and win the turnover. Some excellent carries from Tasha and Kaiyah saw Harlow make the time for an excellent box kick and chase. Datchworth managed to secure the ball under pressure and started to go through the phases. This sucked in the Harlow players and Datchworth attacked well on the outside to get their first try which was converted. (7-0).

The restart was taken well by Wik and her chasing pressure alongside Elexsis, saw the Datchworth player knock on. The resulting scrum gave Tasha an opportunity to attack again and with support from Elise and Lily Harlow were in Datchworth’s ’22. Some excellent carries from Grace and Abi saw Harlow creeping towards the try line. Datchworth managed a turnover at the vital moment and were once again on the attack. However, a great double tackle from Cadence and Tasha bundled the player into touch for a red line out. This was caught well, and the forwards set up a driving maul, this went for 10 meters before it was sent through the hands it particular Cherys and Elexsis showing great skill.  Harlow were going well but sadly gave away a penalty 5m out. Again, giving Datchworth a chance to clear their line. They took a quick tap and carried well until Cherys made a great rip in the middle and passed the ball out. There were some great carries from Niamh and Isabelle and some great passing from Lucy. Datchworth stood strong and managed to get a turnover but were quickly tackled into touch by Isabelle. The resulting line out saw yet another effective maul and a great run by Harlow scrum half, Tasha, but the ball was knocked on again at the 5m. Datchworth were clearing their line well until Ruby put in a thundering tackle that knocked the ball loose, scooped up by Lily Harlow attacked well. There were a few more phases until Grace managed to bump of three defenders to go over the line. Converted by Tasha off the crossbar (7-7).

From the restart Harlow attacked well down the right and saw Wik run in a 40m try which Tasha converted. (7-14). This woke Datchworth up and they were straight back into it. They ran some great lines and were met with fantastic defensive work but still managed to work a great try into the corner. (12-14).

Halftime 12-14.

It was Harlow’s turn to fall asleep at the restart and Datchworth made some great carries and scored almost immediately seeing them retake the lead (17-14). This inspired Datchworth to go all out but some fantastic work from Lily and Isabelle in the tackle and Grace at the ruck kept them back. Niamh and the twins worked really well at were tackling everything. However, Datchworth managed to get their fourth try with some hard running up the middle which they converted (24-14).

Harlow didn’t want to give up on this game yet so decided to spend the last 10 minutes in the Datchworth half. Harlow really put on the pressure and some great carries from Ruby, Kaiyah, Lily, Grace saw Harlow get into a great position. However, once again 5m from Datchworth’s line saw Harlow bundled into touch for a Datchworth lineout. Elise and Lucy lifted well at the front but just missed the turnover. Datchworth tried to clear their line, but the Harlow girls were determined. A fantastic turnover and some great passing saw Connie bump two defenders and score with two more on her back to make it (24-19). The ref decided to call it there.

Final Score 24-19.

This game was a really hard-fought competition and Datchworth were great opponents. Both teams played really good rugby right up to the last kick of the game. Looking forward to the return fixture back at Harlow.

The girls are gaining in skill and confidence every week. Picking Player of the Week is becoming harder and harder. Cherys had an amazing game, Cadence worked really hard on the wing, Ruby had some massive carries but this week it went to Isabelle. She tackled everything and was everywhere. Even the referee complimented her work rate and commitment. Great work.
