Match Report

Sunday 30th September – Westcliff u13s 20 Harlow u13s 10 – Cup

Today we played our first cup game of the season and hosted Westcliff for the second time in two weeks as we played them previously in the league, today was in the cup.

On arrival the conditions were warm and bright, which boded well for the team and they warmed up with tempo.

Once we kicked off we pushed the Westcliff line before they attached our line in a cut and thrust exchange, Westcliff had an attacking scrum where they won the ball and ran a move cutting through our centres to score.

From the kick off we responded well with Henry Stovell making a break through the middle touching down to level the scores. It was great to see so many players working to get close to Henry to support him should he have been caught. (Something we have been working on in training.)
In a game like this with two teams so similar in ability it wasn’t long before Westcliff wanted to press to score again. This time the found some space out wide and following some crisp handling.
Harlow weren’t be outdone and from the kick off Joe Court made a cracking break close taking us close to the. Some power drives later from a number of our players left a gap close to the ruck for Owen Eynon to sneak over.
With it all square coming up to half time the pressure was on which Westcliff converted with a try out wide taking them into half time with a slight advantage.

Half time: 10-15 (2 tries to 3)

The second half lacked opportunities as each side struggled to break down the other. A bit of ill-discipline meant Harlow were marched back a number times by the referee. Westcliff took advantage going wide to touch down for the only try of the half.
The end of the game saw Harlow up the pressure on Westcliff and could have scored at the death with a touch down alleged to have gone forward.

Second half: 0-5 (0 tries to 1)
Final score: 10-20 (2 tries to 4)

It was a good competitive game between two sides who came to play rugby and both sets of supporters will have walked away having been entertained.
The way the waterfall cups work for youth teams is we will play someone in the next round that lost their first game, so we are not “out of the cup” this approach repeats itself and continues throughout the season.
A quick mention to parents, if your child is unable to play please let us know in advance so we can ask other players to step in who may not have been able to play.
