Give Mini Rugby A Try

On Saturday 22nd July Harlow Rugby Club in their new home at Latton Park hosted a free open day so kids can come along and “Give Mini Rugby a Try!” the intention was to get as many kids as possible having fun and playing a bit of rugby.

We did exceptionally well, with over 250 kids coming along to join in over 130 were new kids trying rugby for the first time! The day wasn’t just for the new kids, with many of the kids who have been a big part of the club so far also joining in and enjoying themselves after a summer break.

The day started with kids and their parents signing up for the day, the kids then separated into their age groups and started to have fun.  The sessions involved practicing the skills of running, passing, catching and tagging or for the older kids a little tackle practice.

Part of the day involved teaching the kids a cultural element, and what better than to teach the kids a rugby song. All teams took a break from training to learn a song then at the end came together to sing to each other.

They took to it like a duck to water.

It was a glorious day at the club, the kids all left tired with a big smile on their faces and a certificate. Many wrist bands were given out which displayed the core values of Rugby which are:

  • Teamwork
  • Respect
  • Enjoyment
  • Discipline
  • Sportsmanship

A massive thank you to the volunteers from across the club who helped pull this all together and make it such a success.  This is the sixth year we have run this event which was originally designed to get kids into our entry level under 7’s team now we attract players right across the mini’s section.

Mini Rugby at Harlow is for girls and boys aged 6 (School year 2) to 11 (School year 6)  with boys playing at under 12. Mini Rugby is a series of simplified versions of rugby to introduce kids to rugby. All are welcome, even if they missed the open day, to come along and try rugby at Harlow Rugby Club. We return to training on Sunday 3rd September from 10:30 to 12:00. If you have children who may be keen to try rugby, please bring them along to give it go and see if they like it the first few session will be free.  For an questions or enquiries, please email pauloweneynon@gmail.com.
