In a ground-breaking collaboration, Harlow Mixed Ability joined forces with Chelmsford Rugby Club to form the first-ever Essex County Mixed Ability Rugby team. This pioneering initiative transformed the local rugby landscape, promoting inclusivity and community spirit within the sport.
The newly established team wasted no time in making history. The players from Harlow Mixed Ability embarked on their tour, heading to Broadstreet RFU in Coventry. There, they competed in the prestigious Wooden Spoon Tag Festival, a significant event featuring over 20 teams from across the country. This festival, known for its vibrant and competitive atmosphere, provided an excellent platform for the Harlow players to showcase their talents.
Adding to the excitement, the festival was joined by none other than Jodie Ounsley, renowned as Fury from Gladiators and a formidable player for Exeter Chiefs. Ounsley’s presence was a source of inspiration for the team, highlighting the inclusive nature of mixed ability rugby and the shared passion for the sport.
The Wooden Spoon Tag Festival was more than just a competition; it was a celebration of diversity and camaraderie. The Essex County Mixed Ability Rugby team demonstrated remarkable skill and sportsmanship, earning respect and admiration from fellow competitors and spectators alike. The event fostered new friendships and created lifelong memories for all participants.
Head Coach Charlie expressed his joy at the successful tour: “The partnership with Chelmsford Rugby Club to create the first ever Essex County Mixed Ability Rugby team is a dream come true for us. Competing in the Wooden Spoon Tag Festival was an incredible experience, and having Jodie Ounsley attend the festival was the icing on the cake. The players have built bonds that will last a lifetime and shown what mixed ability rugby is all about. A special mention and thank you must go to the Freemason Essex lodge of XV who supported the team in providing the Essex County playing kit.”
